Halloween is one of the best times of year to help little ones feel brave. 🎃 There’s something wonderful about a child peeking around the corner at a cackling witch, giggling, and then marching right up to say hello.
But there’s a real difference between thrilling and terrifying, especially for our youngest royals. The goal of a spooky party isn’t to scare kids. It’s to give them a safe place to feel brave. ✨
Whether you’re planning for next Halloween or any spooky-themed party, here are our FairyGodmother-approved secrets for spooky fun without the nightmares.
1. Pair the Scary with the Safe
If you’re including a character with a little edge, like our beloved Evil Queen, always bring her kind counterpart along too. Snow White by her side reminds every child that good always wins! 🍎
We call this the “character foil” trick, and it gives little ones a safety anchor. They can look at the villain, feel the thrill of being brave, then look over at their hero and know that everything is okay.
In our Snow White and Evil Queen tea party, the two start out as playful rivals and end up working together. Kids get the fun of a little villainous drama, and the story always lands on kindness and friendship. 💜
2. Make Your Child the Hero of Every Spooky Moment
In our experience, kids rarely get rattled by spooky things they get to triumph over. The trouble comes when scary things simply happen to them.
So flip the script! Instead of asking little ones to watch something spooky, give them a mission. When children are the ones saving the day, the spooky stuff becomes part of their victory story. 🦸
3. Play Games They Can Win
The best spooky games are battles with a built-in happy ending. Here are three of our favorites:
Unwrap the Mummy! 🧻 Kids unravel a wrapped-up “mummy” and discover a sweet, friendly surprise inside, like a fun picture or a little treat. The scary-looking bundle turns out to be a gift!
Pop the Ghost/ Pumpkin! 👻 Kids decorate white and orange balloons with markers or stickers to make silly & spooky ghosts & jack o lanterns. For older kids and kids that are okay with loud noises make it a game who can pop their ghost with their hands, their legs, their back. Who can pop their pumpkin first!
Squash the Spider! 🕷️ Hide paper spiders around the room and let kids stomp them. Every squash reveals a treat underneath, so the creepy-crawlies become the sweetest part of the party.
Notice the pattern? Each game starts with something a little spooky, hands the child the power, and ends with a reward. That’s the whole recipe.
4. Keep the Volume Soft and the Choices Open
Every child has their own comfort level, and that’s exactly how it should be. A few gentle touches go a long way:
- Use soft, friendly voices and skip loud “boo” sounds and sudden surprises.
- Offer a quiet-path option so kids can enjoy the party at their own pace.
- Let children skip anything that feels too spooky, with no pressure and no questions.
- Choose non-flashing decorations and props.
This is the same thoughtful approach behind our Sensory-Friendly Bashes, led by Achieve Beyond certified performers. When a child knows they’re in charge of how brave they want to be, the bravery tends to come on its own. 🌙
5. Keep It Silly
A spooky party doesn’t have to be a scary one. Friendly ghosts, giggling skeletons, shuffling zombies who say a sleepy “good morning” and a cozy, wrapped-up mummy all say the same thing: spooky can be silly, too. Silly is the secret ingredient that keeps the thrill fun. 🧙♀️
Brave, Not Frightened
The magic of a great spooky celebration is that every child walks away feeling braver than when they arrived, with a villain they faced, a hero by their side, and a treasure they won themselves. 💜
If you’d like help planning a spooky-themed party that’s thrilling for everyone, we’d love to hear from you.
